Care guide

Congratulations on your new purchase

At Naveya & Sloane we take great pride in crafting the most meaningful jewellery from the finest materials. Every piece of jewellery is crafted to stand the test of time at the hands of our world class jewellers. It is important to be considerate of the daily wear your jewellery experiences. Like most things, jewellery will experience signs of wear and tear over its lifetime and with special care your jewellery can also be enjoyed by the next generation. We recommend taking the time to read the following care guideline. This has been designed to help you preserve and protect your jewellery for years to come.

Day to day care of your jewellery

To maintain the beauty of your jewellery on a day-to-day basis, we recommend that you avoid any material which can form a film around the gemstone and precious metal. For example; moisturisers, hairspray, soaps or similar substances. These films may make your jewellery appear dull and lifeless.

We recommend removing your jewellery when participating in sports or recreational activities, heavy lifting or cleaning. When force is applied to the metal and settings, damage and deformations can occur. Chemicals and harmful fluids such as those found in household cleaning products can also damage the gemstones and precious metal.

It is important to examine your jewellery often to make sure the settings are tight and secure. Claw settings are particularly delicate and vulnerable. If any loose settings are discovered please contact the Naveya & Sloane service team to arrange for your jewellery to be professionally inspected. We recommend servicing any Naveya & Sloane jewellery every 2 years and have more information about our service offering here.

Designs that feature exposed diamond girdles such as our Chenier, Celebration Diamonds, Claw Set Young at Heart Bands and any diamond bands featuring diamonds larger than 2mm in any setting can sometimes cause damage if worn right next to another ring. We would highly recommend purchasing a stacker band to be worn in between the two rings to protect the exposed diamonds from wearing down the setting of another ring. There is also the option to solder the two rings together to prevent wear caused by the designs rubbing. If you have any concerns please get in touch and we can confirm if your piece would require either of the above.

How to clean your jewellery

For all Yellow Gold, Platinum or Red Gold jewellery you are welcome to bring your piece/s in for an ultrasonic clean to ensure your jewellery looks its absolute best.

For White Gold pieces, we encourage you to bring your Naveya & Sloane jewellery back to us regularly for a professional rhodium plating that gives white gold a bright finish and is commonly used within the jewellery industry.

As with all rhodium plating, please note that it will wear off over time and needs to be reapplied every year or two. Plating is done at the Naveya & Sloane workshop and will incur a charge. Please contact the Naveya & Sloane service team for more information and pricing.

For simple at home cleaning, follow these steps:

  • Soak your jewellery in warm water with dishwashing liquid for about 10-minutes
  • Use a new soft/baby toothbrush to brush any dirt or residue, be sure to try and get under any diamond/gemstone settings as best you can
  • Rinse
  • Dry with a soft cloth or hairdryer

Gemstone Care

Naveya & Sloane hand select only the finest gemstones from New Zealand and around the world. Our gemstones are selected for their brilliance, cut and durability. Follow the day-to-day care guide above to ensure optimal care for your gemstone pieces. Any gemstone below '9' on Mohs Hardness scale wouldn't be recommended for daily wear as these gemstones can be delicate and easily abraded. It is important that these softer gemstones are kept away from any heat, ultrasonic cleaners, and chemicals as these can change the look of the stone. Please speak to your jewellery consultant to confirm the best care solution for your particular gemstone.

Gemstone Settings

At Naveya & Sloane our gemstones and diamonds are precision set under microscope. Like all metals, the precious metals used in Naveya & Sloane jewellery have the potential to relax after the initial setting process. This can result in a gemstone setting loosening and the stone itself feeling loose, if not addressed, a gemstone could be lost. This effect only happens in the first few months after crafting and is a normal and uncontrollable process. We always endeavour to craft our jewellery to the highest standard and we recommend you check your jewellery after the first month of wear for any signs of this effect. After this initial settling process, gemstones can still become loose through daily wear and tear. This is why we strongly recommend you take care when wearing your jewellery and have it inspected regularly.

Ring Resizing

Care should be taken to make sure your correct ring size is ordered before purchase to avoid unnecessary resizes. In the case where you need a ring size adjusted please note that a faint line can sometimes be visible at the join. We highly recommend that you bring your jewellery back to Naveya & Sloane for any repairs and resizes.

Repair & Maintenaince Service

Even with great care, jewellery can become damaged and in need of repair. Naveya & Sloane offer a full repair and maintenance service for our customers. If the damage is deemed to be a manufacturing fault we will repair the jewellery free of charge, otherwise a charge may apply.

Any jewellery requiring repair will be assessed by Naveya & Sloane’s expert jewellers.

To help, below we have specified the type of damage that we consider to be a manufacturing fault vs general wear and tear.

Examples of the type of damage that is deemed to be a manufacturing fault*:

  • Loose stones as a result of the jewellery relaxing, often identified within the first few months after crafting has been completed.
  • Breakage due to weak solder
  • Cracking along the resize line
  • Broken springs on clasps
  • Popped out necklace chain joint
  • Claws that are not flat on the stone (e.g. leading to catching on clothing)

Examples of the type of damage that is deemed to be general wear and tear:

  • A ring that has been bent out of shape (distorted rings)
  • Accidental damage caused to jewellery (e.g. being run over by car)
  • Broken links in a necklace chain
  • Loosening of a clasp over time
  • Claws that require re-tipping
  • Chipped, cracked or broken gemstone
  • Damage to the jewellery caused by yourself or another party
  • Loss or theft of your jewellery
  • Scratches, dents or marks to any metal surface;
  • Stones that require repolishing/re-faceting (e.g. sapphires)
  • The wearing of rhodium plating
  • Wear on base of the shanks (e.g. dents on jewellery from coming into contact with other objects)
  • Wearing down of the underside of the claws (e.g. baskets wearing down from diamonds)

*Providing there is no other evidence of damage to your jewellery

Caring for your Tennis Bracelets, Riviere Necklaces & Chains

Due to their unique and complex manufacturing, Tennis Bracelets, Rivière Necklaces and Chains require additional care. As fine jewellery pieces, chains, rivière necklaces and tennis bracelets are recommended for occasional wear, frequent wear is likely to reduce the lifetime of the piece.

  • We recommend service assessments after the first six months of purchase and then every year thereafter. The first service is complimentary. Service assessments are done in house to check the link and clasp, diamond and setting integrity.
  • If the damage is deemed to be a manufacturing fault we will repair the jewellery free of charge, otherwise a charge will apply. Please refer to our guide to determine what is wear and tear compared with a manufacturing fault.
  • Any repairs or resizing needed are done externally with varying lead times ranging from 2-8 weeks depending on the complexity. Pricing of repairs and resizing is also dependent on complexity and is quoted prior to entering the workshop.
  • We strongly recommend measuring prior to purchasing to ensure the correct fit. Please note some chain cannot be resized. Please refer to our measurement guide on the product page or contact a sales consultant for advice or in-house sizing.
  • As with all white gold jewellery, we recommend white gold chain, rivière necklaces and tennis bracelets be rhodium plated every 18 months to ensure a bright white finish. This holds an additional cost.
