WHICH PRECIOUS METAL SHOULD I CHOOSE?

There is no right or wrong answer when it comes to selecting a precious metal for your engagement ring; it's about choosing an option that suits you best.  Several factors are taken into consideration when making recommendations, including lifestyle, design preferences, and skin tone.

To understand what works best for you we have outlined some key differences below and our exceptional team can guide you through the options to find the perfect match for you.

YELLOW & RED (ROSE) GOLD

Pure yellow gold is the softest of the precious metal family. For this reason, it must have other alloys such as silver and copper added to it to give it the strength and durability required when crafting jewellery.

Rose gold (known as red gold in the industry) will have more copper alloys added to it than 18k yellow gold, to give it a warm colouring.

We craft our engagement rings and bespoke designs in 18k gold to provide the richest yellow gold colour while ensuring the durability and strength of your piece. We also offer 9k gold for plain wedding bands and a range of designs from our Fine Jewellery collections.

WHITE GOLD

White gold begins as yellow gold before alloys are added to give it its white colour. Once the piece is crafted, white gold jewellery is then rhodium plated to give it a pure white colouring, a worldwide standard process when working with white gold.

Rhodium is the most precious of metals and is naturally very silver in colour, making it a great option to plate with. The rhodium plating does wear off over time and after 12-18 months, the metal will become a slightly warmer tone. We recommend replating white gold every few years to ensure it is always fresh and bright.

PLATINUM

Platinum is a white coloured metal and while it looks similar to white gold, it is from a different precious metal family. Platinum is a dense metal, making it slightly harder wearing than 18K gold blends (red, yellow and white). As it is naturally white in colour, it does not require any plating to keep it looking fresh and icy, making it a lower maintenance option than 18k white gold. This means that it does not have the ongoing replating cost like white gold.

9K vs 18K Gold

There are two different kinds of hardness when it comes to the karat of gold. 9K gold has a higher indentation hardness, which means that it is less malleable than 18K gold and often less likely to bend out of shape.

However, it has more parts other metal alloys than gold (37.5% pure gold), which means that the colour is slightly different and it can be more brittle. 18K gold on the other hand has a higher gold content (75% pure gold) and a higher abrasive hardness. This means that it wears better over time and takes longer to wear away.

We craft our engagement rings and bespoke designs in 18K gold (or platinum) as we believe this is a beautiful combination of durability and rich colour for such a precious piece. We offer 9K gold for plain wedding rings and some of our Fine Jewellery designs. If you're unsure what to choose for your piece, our expert team can help guide you.
